Merry Mixers appreciate homecooked meals
Merry Mixer Bonnie Hurkmans is the cook at the Gwinn clubhouse.
She and her merry band of volunteers cook and serve noon meals
on weekdays, except for Wednesdays.
Hurkmans, who owned the Gwinn restaurant Jemmas at one time ,
is a naturally good cook aside from her credentials. She is loved
equally by the customers and her sidekicks, and is happy
that even the most finicky customers are pleased with the
menus.
These well balanced, totally healthy and nourishing meals keep
the seniors on track with any diet, and it is often the best meal
they have all day. Besides the usual seniors who attend weekly,
they often bring friends and family to join in the fellowship
enjoyed by the happy group.
From the dining table, they mosey into the Senior Drop-in
Center, on the way out to linger around the fireplace and
sing songs or just carry their conversations further before heading
home. This is when Hurkmans hears, one by one, It was a
good meal, Bonnie.
Hurkmans also takes on the extra chore of larger groups that
come for dinner. The noon meal is more of a dinner than a lunch.
Happy to please Julie Shaw, senior director, she prepares enough
to satisfy neighboring seniors when the Merry Mixers invite them to
dinner.
Hurkmans, a generous cook, has prepared the entire Christmas meal,
with the help of donations and volunteers, for the past few
years. This she offers, free of charge, to Gwinn and area residents
on Christmas Day. Look for the announcement in the Forsyth Township
monthly newsletter again this year.

Gwinn farmers market set to begin in July
Starting in July, Gwinn residents will have the opportunity to
buy local food and products straight from the farmers and artisans
who produced them.
The newly formed Gwinn Farmers Market, sponsored by Forsyth Township,
will open on July 2 and run through the end of September. The
market will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays in
Peter Nordeen Park.
Peter Nordeen Park offers a perfect setting for a weekly market:
lotsof green space, beautiful river, covered pavilions and a central
location. Live music will round out the experience.
Farmers markets become an integral part of a community with
many benefits to local farmers and local businesses, market
organizer Colleen Carlyle said. Over time, they turn into
more than a place to shop. Markets become a gathering place for
friends and neighbors to visit, listen to live music, and enjoy
the natural environment.
Market shoppers can expect to find local produce and eggs as well
as handcrafted soaps, fresh cut flowers, artwork and more. Farm
vendors will be registered to accept Project Fresh coupons. All
products will be grown or made by local U.P. residents. The market
already has several committed vendors but still is accepting vendor
applications. Musicians also are needed. A concert series and
educational workshops are in the planning phase.
Those interested in being market vendors or offering musical talent
should contact market master Beth Jakubowski at 346-5698. Applications
may be picked up at the Forsyth Township offices located on the
corner of Pine and Flint.
