Donating precious time
Edna Hocking is the  president of the Forsyth Merry Mixers. This silver-haired senior citizen with her generous volunteering habits is a shining example to others, especially those who admire her, help her and tend to follow her lead.
Hocking volunteers at the VFW, where you can find her making pasties on the first Monday of each month. She is the president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Adding to this list, she is a member of the Forsyth Township library board, the historical society and the Council on Aging. She runs the SHARE program in our area, which requires her to be at the clubhouse at 5:00 a.m. to distribute the groceries ordered. Besides this impressive list, she sings in the church choir and is on the Parish Council.
Although I don’t recommend trying to keep up with Edna’s pace, she definitely inspires others to keep active and have a productive life, even in the senior years.
Hocking makes the world a better place by her volunteerism, cheerful attitude and contagious smile.

School open house planned
Sawyer Elementary School will host an open house at 6:00 p.m. on September 2 and at 1:00 p.m. on September 3.
Each open house will begin with an assembly for parents/guardians in the school cafeteria.
Students and family members are encouraged to come and meet their child’s new teacher and learn about all the great things Sawyer has planned for the 2009-10 school year. Each assembly will end with a drawing of door prizes from local businesses.
To welcome everyone back to school, families are invited to a picnic dinner on September 2 after the open house assembly.
The school will provide hot dogs, chips, lemonade and cake.
If family members have Gwinn or Sawyer T-shirts, please wear them to the open house to show your school spirit.
Families who cannot attend the evening open house and picnic will have another opportunity on September 3. Light refreshments will be served as well.
Class lists will not be posted around the community or at the school as in previous years.
Parents must attend one of the two assemblies in order to receive their child’s placement.
If you are not able to attend one of our open houses, staff members will be available to direct students to the correct classroom on the first day of school.
